Response
to “Why the Marriage Plot Never Gets Older”
When the author encounters the
marriage-plot argument, he gets a sinking feeling. He clarifies his opinion
about why the marriage plot never gets older. First, he thinks the liberation
of women and liberalization of divorce law didn’t deprive the novel of the form whose protagonists contended with
societal repression. The marriage is dependent mainly on psychological and
internal drama rather than external factors. In addition, the marriage plot
always has a happy ending. The novels in the contemporary life stand on both
sides. Some have a happy ending, while others have a bad ending. What’s more, he thinks that the novels of the twentieth and twenty-first
century seem to lack certain qualities that the predecessors possessed.
From my point, I acknowledge that the
marriage plot never gets older. Actually, the protagonists in the past century
suffer from poverty and hardship. Thus, these protagonists have distinctive
features compared to the couples in the contemporary century. They have hard work
spirit which isn’t embodied on the contemporary couples. Love lasts
forever, no matter how long time has passed. With the marriage time becoming
longer, their emotion between each other is more and more profound. Not like
the initial love, long-time touch with each other make their love become
another kind of love. This kind of love is similar to the love between
relatives. The marriage plot never gets older.
